Hanover Police responded to a shoplifting incident at Wegmans on Sylvan Way on Feb. 18, Hanover police said.
The accused shoplifters fled in a blue Volkswagen with Pennsylvania plates prior to police arrival but were apprehended a short time later on Route 202 in Morris Plains, authorities said.
When speaking with the driver, identified as Yusef Dunbar, 47, of East Orange, and the passenger, Filoreta Bruncaj, 40, of West Caldwell, officers allegedly observed items from Wegmans and other grocery stores in the vehicle in plain sight.
The stolen Wegmans merchandise was worth $319.66, and numerous items from Stop & Shop in Morris Plains were also found in the vehicle, authorities said.
It was later confirmed that Dunbar had several warrants totaling $5,500 and two wanted persons warrants out of Union and Essex Counties, authorities said.
He was subsequently charged with hindering and conspiracy and issued several motor vehicle summonses.
Bruncaj, who police say had hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia in her possession, also had multiple warrants totaling $1,600.00 and several wanted person warrants, authorities said. She was charged with shoplifting, conspiracy, possession of hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia.
Both suspects were jailed pending court appearances.
